Guest Post ~ How & Why I Started Writing Romance & Erotica by Jeanie Grey (Author of the Awakening)

I’ve been writing since I was a kid and I tried to write my first novel when I was in high school, but for several years I abandoned the idea, thinking it was impractical to try to be an author. It was only in 2012 that I decided to give myself a fair shot and just make it happen already.

I found the prospect of finishing and publishing a book really daunting because I’m never satisfied with what I write, but I also knew that if I didn’t write something and publish it anyway, despite its flaws, I’d never move beyond my perfectionism paralysis. So I finished & published Awakening, the first book in the Lilly Frank trilogy, my vampire romance series. Because these are the first three books I’ve published, the series has a very special place in my heart.

The trilogy tells the story of Lilly Frank, a woman who has responded to tragedy in her life by basically shutting down until she meets Torren, the hero of the series, whose presence causes her to awaken to herself again. It’s an exploration of the lengths someone might go to in order to feel safe, of vampirism as a possible solution to vulnerability and uncertainty, and of what it means not just to survive but to be truly alive.

I choose to write romanceand erotica because I’ve been reading and enjoying romance books ever since I found my grandma’s stash of Harlequin romances at the tender age of eight or nine but also because I think that, to a large extent, human sexuality is still repressed in U.S. culture, and women’s sexuality in particular. “Slut”-shaming still abounds, a woman’s right to choose what to do with her body is still a matter of national debate, and the vast majority of romance novels still portray women’s sexual role as a passive one. I think there’s great opportunity in romance and erotica writing to challenge these cultural norms and help facilitate a shift towards equality and sex positivity.
