About the Author

USA Today bestselling author Carol Ross grew up in small town America right between the Pacific Ocean and the Cascade Mountains, in a place where you can go deep sea fishing in the morning and then hit the ski slopes the same afternoon. The daughter of what is now known as free range parents, she developed a love of the outdoors at a very early age. As a writer, Carol loves to breathe the life she has lived into the characters she creates, grateful for the “research material” that every questionable decision, adrenaline-charged misstep, and near-death experience has provided.

~ Author Interview ~

1) What inspires you to write?

Reading! I love to read and there are so many wonderful authors out there. When I read something amazing I want to do it, too. I often fall short in my quest but trying to get it just right is definitely what spurs me on.

2) What is the most challenging thing about being an author?

It’s a ton of hard work. (I know what you’re thinking – Thank you, Captain Obvious.) For years, I wrote for fun before ever submitting a manuscript for publication. Writing was something I did when I felt like it, when I was inspired and motivated and happy. As a result, it usually went well. Most things do when you’re in the right frame of mind, right? Now I don’t have that luxury. I have to write even when I’m tired, not feeling well, or dealing with a tragedy. Fortunately, I’ve learned that writing can also make these “bad” things disappear from my mind, if even for a short while.

3) Who is your favourite character that you have written and why?

Oh, this is such a difficult question! It’s like picking the best of my best friends. But I’m going to go with Janie from If Not for a Bee. (Book #3 in my Seasons of Alaska series.) As a widow and single mom of four kids, Janie is so desperate to do the right thing for her children. I love her internal struggle and how she forces herself outside her comfort zone because she knows it’s the best thing for her kids, and ultimately for herself, too. She’s loosely based on my oldest sister who is an incredible mother, grandmother, and elementary school teacher, although not a widow or a single mom.

4) What is the best thing about being a writer?

The answer to this one surprises even me! I love all the amazing people I’ve met, other authors, readers, bloggers, and reviewers. So many have become friends, and friends who “get” me. That’s rare in life, I think. I love to open my email and find that a reader has gone out of their way to contact me and tell me that a story touched them in some way or made them laugh.

And being able to work in my PJ’s!

5) What inspired this book?

In a general sense, the main character, Tag James, was overdue for an HEA. He’s made an appearance in every previous Seasons of Alaska book. Readers seem to love him almost as much as I do, and I’ve received the most requests for him to get his own story. So there’s that.

When it came to setting him up with the right woman, I knew I needed a strong conflict. Ideally, one that had them at odds externally and internally, so that he couldn’t easily brush her off. Tag is a pilot who owns an air transport company that does emergency medical evacuations. Since health and alternative medicine is sort of a hobby of mine, it seemed like a good place for them to butt heads. I think it worked out beautifully and I hope readers do, too!

6) Where do you come up with your ideas to write?

Most of my story ideas come from my characters. I know this sounds weird because they’re imaginary people. But as these people (um, I mean characters) take shape in my mind. I learn their personalities, their struggles, habits, likes and dislikes. Then I put my imaginary friends characters in sticky, uncomfortable situations and see how they react. I always start with a line or two of dialogue and the story (usually) flows from there.
