The pampered diva is about to meet her match

Songbird Gloria Houghton has always needed to be the center of attention, but the spotlight has shifted. Seeking fame and a fresh start, she finds a new stage in Branson, Missouri…only to risk being replaced by a manipulative rival. If Gloria can’t be the star, who is she?

Jack-of-all-trades Nick Sherwood is just one leaf on a vast family tree that includes a restaurant chef, hotel owners, and even the headline act at a family-owned theater. He’s seen how fame can blind a person with jealousy and is more than content to stay in the background thank you very much. If only he wasn’t so fascinated–and irritated–by the newest addition to the staff.

After a disaster of a first impression and financial difficulties land Gloria in the humblest of jobs—with Nick as her boss—it might be time for her to learn to sing a new song.

Monday, Mid-April

If only her new beginning didn’t depend upon a flawless first impression.

Gloria applied another layer of lip gloss and fluffed the curled blond hair around her shoulders. With one last rehearsed smile in the mirror, she stashed the makeup in her purse and exited Sherwood Theater’s restroom.

After a long-distance audition and weeks of rehearsing the music on her own, the time had come to meet the rest of the singers in the brand-new “Rockin’ the Decades” show debuting soon on the strip in Branson, Missouri.

Showtime.

She flipped her curls and strode through the lobby, past the concession stand and row of closed auditorium doors, toward the box office and nondescript “Employees Only” door tucked away around the corner. Employees seemed like such a generic word for the onstage talent, but when the boss said to use a certain door while a show was going on, one obeyed.

Her favorite red sling-back heels clicked across the tiled floor—the perfect accent to go with her blinged-out T-shirt and designer jeans. Tyler Sherwood’s e-mail had also mentioned dressing casually, but this was show business, and while she had a guaranteed spot in the overall lineup, today they might start dividing up specific songs.

The shoes were her secret weapon. And paired with her voice, she was sure to get noticed and earn a spotlight solo. Or two.

Gloria pushed through the swinging door and found herself in a dim concrete hallway near a few office doors and a supply closet with no rehearsal rooms in sight.

Now where? Hmm. Tyler had included a building map with his e-mail. She quickly found the message on her phone and proceeded down the hallway past a storage area for old set pieces.

From the laughter and cheers on her left, the current show must be almost over.

What would it feel like to be just one of multiple productions occupying the same space instead of claiming the main attraction? She shrugged. As long as she was a star in one of them, she’d be able to knock on better doors.
